David M. Spear—THE NEUGENTS—1st Ed HC—Outsider NC Photos—Jargon Society—SIGNED

Description: • For Your Consideration: • AN INSCRIBED & SIGNED HARDCOVER (First Edition, First Printing) of: • “THE NEUGENTS: CLOSE TO HOME”(JARGON SOCIETY, 1993) (HARDCOVER, First Edition, First Printing) • PHOTOGRAPHS & TEXT BY DAVID M. SPEAR • AFTERWORD BY JONATHAN WILLIAMS • SIGNING NOTE: The photographer’s inscription & signature appear in black ink on the front free endpaper as follows: “For DARNELL, I hope you have a happy and prosperous 1994 —DAVID M. SPEAR Jan 25, 1994.” • ABOUT THIS TITLE: • “THE NEUGENTS: CLOSE TO HOME is a large-scale book of 66 black and white photographs of one North Carolina family.”—THE PUBLISHER • “In the late 1980s and early 90s, North Carolina photographer DAVID SPEAR spent several years documenting the lives of his neighbors, THE NEUGENTS. The family owned a tobacco farm in Rockingham County, and his photos depicted their attempts to keep their tobacco farm alive at a time when many others were dying. He described THE NEUGENTS as ‘fabulous people’ who ‘raise hell, and they don’t try to hide it.’” —WUNC (RADIO STATION) • “I began photographing THE NEUGENTS in 1987. I had chosen them as subjects because of the uniqueness of their lifestyle. What I found fascinating about them was their stubborn commitment to the attitudes more reminiscent of tobacco farmers of the early part of the century. They were throwbacks who continued to struggle within a system that had been replaced by agribusiness and industrial development.”—DAVID M. SPEAR, FROM HIS INTRODUCTION • “Well, at first, you think the material simply couldn’t be that promising—country folks feudin’, fightin’ and a-fussin’ in the Carolina Piedmont. Of course, you’d be wrong. DAVE SPEAR lives a way down a dirt road from THE NEUGENTS…. He and his cameras have spent over six years devoted to a group of exiles who happen to be his neighbors. He is, obviously, amazed and fascinated by THE NEGUENTS. More than that, he is dedicated to THE NEUGENTS, recording their life as it happens…. DAVE SPEAR tears down walls and let’s us see grace and humanity where we never expected to find it. How seldom plain, ordinary people are ever scrutinized this closely, except by the police and our innumerable hucksters and evangelists…. He has come at them straight-on and developed a clear, plate glass style with no frills, no fashion, no agenda…. When has one seen more honest pictures?” —JONATHAN WILLIAMS, FROM THE AFTERWORD • “I looked again at THE NEUGENTS the other day, and I must say that it is a piece of work. If you never do anything good again, you are in my judgment already off the hook.” —JOHN SZARKOWSKI, LATE DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY, MUSEUM OF MODERN ART • “SPEAR doesn’t blink behind his camera lens, making us see the common humanity in these country cousins.”—DALE NEAL, ASHEVILLE CITIZEN • “A tour de force that is an important social document and contemporary—art statement, as well as a moving, respectful and decidedly unsentimental depiction of a vanishing way of rural American life.” —TOM PATTERSON • ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER: “DAVID M. SPEAR is a well-known photographer who was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for his work on THE NEUGENTS. His work is in the collections of major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art. He is also the author of Visible Spirits, Photographs of Mexico.” —THE PUBLISHER • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “THE NEUGENTS: CLOSE TO HOME” PHOTOGRAPHER & AUTHOR: DAVID M. We enjoy treating FLAPPINCAT customers with honesty & respect & warmth because that’s how we like to be treated when we buy things on eBay.2. GENERAL ATTITUDE. We are grateful you choose to trust us with your business. We aim for that gratitude to permeate every part of how we engage with you.3. OUR DESCRIPTIONS. We describe every item we sell as clearly and accurately as we can. When it comes to describing condition, we tend toward being conservative. 4. PACKING & SHIPPING. We know from experience that items, when not thoughtfully packed, can be damaged during shipment. To avoid that real danger, FLAPPINCAT wraps & cushions your purchase(s) mindfully—and sometimes zealously—in a sturdy package. WARNING: In our zeal, we sometimes over-tape containers and you may need a penknife to unseal our shipments. NOTE: Though we often recycle shipping materials, we do NOT stint on protection. 5. OUR PRICES. We try to offer the lowest prices on eBay for items we sell. Even our most expensive offerings tend to be lower than what others are asking. “You could look it up!” —to quote baseball immortal JACK KEEFE. SUMMARY: We know you have many buying options on eBay. FLAPPINCAT tries to be distinctive by being accurate, mindful, and friendly. *********** How We GRADECONDITION ***********DETAILS. The condition of every item we sell will be described in detail.FLAWS. All discernible flaws will be noted, if not emphasized. Of course, the grading of condition can be subjective. And since no grader is perfect, it is possible that we may at times miss a flaw. It is also possible that we may miss some perfections! Should we make a mistake, you will find FLAPPINCAT eager to fix things with you. Just send us a note and we’ll get on it.GRADING SYSTEM. For books and magazines (and even other items), we use these terms (in order of desirability): VERY FINE or LIKE NEW FINE (or EXCELLENT) NEAR FINE (or NF) VERY GOOD PLUS (or VG+) VERY GOOD (or VG) GOOD FAIR ACCEPTABLE POOR “POOR.” Except in rare cases, for rare items, we tend to avoid selling items that are in utterly “POOR” condition. It is more likely that on a rare item, only one part of an item (out of numerous parts) will be described as “POOR.”RETURNS. We accept that you may wish to return a purchase because you genuinely think we haven't described and graded its condition properly. We accept that we our* imperfect. We also accept that people can see things differently—and still be civil! (*Get it?)POP QUIZ. Please feel free to ask questions at any time about condition (or anything else, except math).
