Description: "Beautiful music. It was a privilege to be featured on this project. Exciting music, great writing and solos with excellent musicianship exhibited by everyone. Truly an honor!" – David Liebman “Dave Liebman, luminous and resplendent, a witness to an era that clearly breaks his heart, brings intelligence and beauty here. This work should be saluted both artistically and intellectually—it is simply grandiose.” – Thierry De Clemensat, PARIS-MOVE “Liebman’s soprano takes the part of shofar at times, and other moments that of a cantor, then creating crescent moons of glowing late night atmosphere. The mix of Semitic and swing is as delicious as za’atar on bread.” – George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly “On the whole, this is big band horn beauty at its best…a unique project that draws on modern big band traditions to explore the various cultures of the Middle East.” – Dee Dee McNeil, Muscialmemoirs Blog This project was a long time coming. Originally commissioned by the Syracuse University Humanities Center as an offering of their annual symposium, themed that year as “Conflict: Peace and War,” with additional funding from S.U. Hillel and the Jewish Federation of Central New York, the suite If a White Horse from Jerusalem, featuring David Liebman and composed by Bret Zvacek was world-premiered April 16th 2011 in celebration of our orchestra’s 15th Anniversary season. After the concert, Mr. Liebman suggested we record it – high praise coming from an NEA Jazz Master (he was inducted that year.) That promise was not forgotten. The arts grant establishment didn’t offer a funding source for such things until an opportunity came along in the form of ARPA recovery funding for programming administered by our arts council, CNY Arts. With that funding and new funding from our regional Jewish Federation, Jewish Community Foundation, The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, Bousquet Holstein PLLC, individuals, and the help of Alicia Gross and her staff at the Temple, this suite was performed and recorded in Temple Adath Yeshurun in Syracuse in November of 2022. Thanks are due to many who made this happen. Without the high artistry of David Liebman and the world-class composition and arranging of our Music Director Bret Zvacek, this piece never would have gained such acclaim. Thanks as well to Caris Liebman for her eyes, ears, and compassion throughout the project, and the CNY Jazz team that made it happen – Cathy O’Brien, Cherie Giraud, Tom Honan, and especially the musicians of the CNY Jazz Orchestra, who performed at their usual over-and-above level. Additional thanks to Neil Rube and Gary Lavine for their support, Prof. Tony D’Angelo and his S.U. Account Team, and to Rob Enslin for his tireless advocacy for this effort from conception to denouement. This album includes additional pieces that we know you will enjoy, composed and arranged by members of the CNYJO, a composers’ orchestra. In light of current world events, this piece is as relevant today as the day it was brought to fruition over 11 years ago. We hope that in some way it increases understanding, promotes unity, and fosters peace – the peace of nations and of the soul. Larry Luttinger , Executive Director, CNY Jazz Central
