Description: DESCRIPTION: CAPTIVATING - This is the first introduction of this bulb to the public in 2018. Only a handful of specialized crinum collectors have this extremely rare hybrid. We paid $400 for a medium-size bulb and have been growing it for 6 years. It is one of the most fantastic crinum in our collection and was worth every dollar we spent to obtain it. This would be considered a large size plant. The rich pink flowers have thin petals, a white center and striking green eye. Most of the flowers open at the same time, which is an especially wonderful characteristic. It is slow to offset the first few years, but once it reaches a mature size, it will begin to produce at least several offsets each year. We have observed up to 24 flowers on 42" tall scape, but feel the mother bulb is still growing and could produce even more flowers and taller scapes given more time. One of the parents, procerum (the large crinum asiaticum with purple leaves), comes in lots of forms but some can grow to 6+' tall and often have 36 or more flowers. We have recorded blooms in January, May, July, September and December, so in the right climate, zone 10, or higher, it would probably bloom year-round. Our largest bulb is over 4" in diameter, about the size of mature procerum. We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Captivating was hybridized by the late, Al Bauman. Al was a close friend of Herb’s and spent several decades doing crosses with procerum. Herb Kelly got four different hybrids when Al died. Three of these he named and have bloomed (we have two, Captivating and Inspriation, which also cost us $400). Timeless Splendor bloomed for Herb in 2012 and started to offset in 2013, and the 4th bulb had not bloomed or offset as of that time and was not named yet. It's unknown if Al used procerum pollen on another crinum or used some other pollen on a procerum). GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: This is most likely more tender than most crinum. Procerum don't usually survive below, and struggle in, zone 8. It does well here in northeast Florida, zone 9, but we do not think it would survive outside below zone 7+ or 8. This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils (but prefers rich soil). In zone 8 we would recommend planting it a bit deeper and mulching heavily in the winter. Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for extended periods if allowed to dry. They prefer full sun, but partial shade is OK. They will also make excellent, container plants. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a small-size bulb at least 1 year old and about 1/2-1" in diameter which should bloom within 3-4 years. Procerum varieties and hybrids grow more slowly. They don't like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
