Description: Crassula ovata, Gollum Jade plant Common names include: Gollum Jade Origin: South Africa and now cultivated worldwide. Description: small succulent that can range from 2 to 3 feet tall and spread 1 to 2 feet wide. As the plants grows and gets larger, it appears more thick, shrub-like with a woody trunk and stems which form interesting patterns. The green waxy leaves are tubular and end in the shape of a little red cup. Some say that these ends appear as suction cups reminiscent of Gollum, the character in J.R.R. Tolkein’s book, The Hobbit. This plant is commonly confused with the Hobbit Jade which has elongated, paddle-shaped leaves that curl back around looking similar to a rodent’s ears. The Gollum Jade will have some Hobbit-like leaves as well. Flowers: small pinkish/white, star-like flowers that appear in fall and early winter. Growth requirements: full sun to bright shade, drought tolerant once established, likes natural rainfall or water once a month during the hot summer. Can tolerate temperatures from 25°F to 100°F. When in full sun, the green leaves can take on a yellow hue which is striking with the red tips. Move the plant out of the direct sun and into bright shade and the leaves will turn back to green over time. Soil: sandy/cactus mixture with good, quick drainage. If planting in a container, allow water to drain through the hole; never allow the plant to sit in water. Propagation: removal of the offsets or cut off a stem and plant it. All of the Crassula ovata, Gollum Jade plants were grown outdoors in southern California and are very strong and hardy plants.
