Description: Cradle Will Rock by Tim Robbins, published by Newmarket Press 2000, 1st/1st; Marc Blitzstein lyrics copyright 1965. This hardcover coffee-table book is in excellent condition, both the dust jacket and the book. There is minor wear to the edges of the dust jacket; the book itself is Like New. Marc Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock, a contemporary folk-opera written in 1937 and accepted by John Housman and Orson Welles to be performed in the New York theater venue of the Federal Theater Project, was shut down on opening night by the federal authorities because of its left-leaning, pro-union message. At the last minute, the production and audience moved to a theater across town. Because Equity performers were forbidden from performing in this non-union house, Blitzstein sat alone on stage at a piano playing the music; most of the actors spoke their parts sitting in their seats as part of the audience. The Federal Theater Project was terminated in 1939. In 1999, Tim Robbins wrote and directed a film about the events surrounding that performance, and the downfall of the FTP. It ended with a re-enactment of the renegade performance of The Cradle Will Rock. The cast included Ruben Blades, Bill Murray, Vanessa Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, John Turtoro and many others. This book includes the complete shooting script, notes on the making of the film, historical sidebars of that turbulent time in the USA, 120 illustrations including archival photos, movie stills, and behind-the-scene photos.
