French prelate Emmanuel Marbeau (1844-1921), bishop of Meaux (1910-21), introduces his translation and presents it to Pope Pius X (1835-1914), the conservative pope known for aggressively opposing modern interpretations of Church doctrine. The Council of Trent (1545-63) was the landmark ecumenical gathering and Protestant Reformation opposition that resulted in this official Roman Catholic elaboration and clarification of many of the Church's teachings and doctrines -- and Pius X's predecessor Pope Pius IV oversaw its final sessions in 1562-63.
