Description: Cornelian Cherry Dogwood, Cornus mas, Tree Seeds Hardy, Showy Flowers, Showy Edible Fruits, Attracts Birds, Wildlife Food, Exfoliating Bark, Bonsai, Hedge/Windbreak, Cold Tolerant Cornelian Cherry Dogwood is a multi-stemmed, low-branching, round to oval, deciduous shrub or small tree which typically grows 15 to 25 feet tall. It features tiny, yellow, star-like flowers borne in umbels which appear in late winter to early spring before the foliage (similar to Forsythia). Flowers give way to tiny red drupes which mature in summer. Drupes are technically edible, but not particularly tasty and are infrequently harvested unless for use in syrups or jams. Drupes persist well into fall unless consumed earlier by birds. Deep green, oval leaves acquire an undistinguished, dull purple tinge in autumn. Attractive grayish brown bark exfoliates on mature branches. Leaf: Opposite, simple, ovate to elliptical, entire with arcuate veins, 2 1/2 to 5 inches long, dark green above, lighter below. Flower: Monoecious; small (1/8 inch) yellow, in tight small (1 inch across) clusters, very numerous, appearing before the leaves in early spring. Fruit: Elongated, bright red drupe, 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, ripening in late summer. Twig: Slender, glabrous, purplish red and green, turn brown the second year, pith white, leaf buds slender and pointed, flower buds much larger and round. Bark: Dark gray to reddish brown, scaly, curling, exfoliating patches.
