Complete Rare 1874 Gray's Atlas Of The United States, IN VERY NICE CONDITION!

Description: RARE COMPLETE COPY OF GRAY'S ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES, PUBLISHED IN 1874, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. O. W. Gray was a publishing firm based in Philadelphia. Later, they published as O. W. Gray & Son. They published atlases in the late nineteenth century. Gray's National Atlas was one of the most successful commercial ventures of the 1870s and one of the last to employ hand coloring on maps. This listing is for this IMPORTANT ATLAS. The atlas, as I found it, had boards which needed work. The interior text block and pages were solidly bound, clean, without tears or marks. However, the boards and spine showed wear, and there was a century plus of dust. The boards were professionally refurbished/restored and cleaned, the spine was rebuilt, and the binding of the boards to the text block was reinforced with binding tape at the front and rear endpaper cracks (front endpaper shown in listing photo). One of the four leather board corners was missing and was replaced - it is the top right of front cover. The boards were cleaned and sealed, and the results of this restoration show a shiny brown textured board with clear and clean gilt titling on front board. The remnants of the spine titling are present and visible - see listing photo. The endpapers are clean, the binding is solid. AND THE MAPS ARE SPECTACULAR, as seen in listing photo. The text portion, with itself some stunning maps, goes to page 68, followed by maps to page 153, which begins a listing of US Post Offices. This list goes to the end of the Atlas at page 175. Then there are 4 blank leaves, ending with the endpaper leaf which was floral on one side. In a careful flip-through, one map was seen to have a bit of light staining - this was South America and it is shown in the listing photo. There was light age-toning around the page edges, and a few pages showed small tears at the fore-edge, no doubt from page-turning. SL
