His major work was the multi-volume "Natural History" (Histoire naturelle generale et particuliere), which he wrote in collaboration with Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton (1716-1799). Its 44 volumes were published beginning in 1749, and their major scientific recognition and popularity was awarded him in his home country.
