Description: Columbia Newberry & Laurens #2 Columbia SC 2-1916 by Karl E Schlachter Sr. 1st #2 4-4-0 Baldwin 1875 ex North Carolina RR #640 to Southern Ry. #1170 to Columbia, Newberry & Laurens #2, in 10/1897, via W. C. Clark. Retired ca. 1911. Scrap after 2-1916 The predecessor company, the Newberry & Laurens Railroad, was incorporated on December 26, 1885, by special act of the South Carolina Legislature. The name was changed by charter amendment dated December 24, 1886, to the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens Railroad. The railroad was originally projected from Columbia, SC to Spartanburg, SC, 100 miles. The railroad extended from a connection with the Atlantic Coast Line RR at Columbia to a connection with the Charleston & Western Carolina Railway at Laurens. The gauge was originally 4' 9", but by June 1914, had been narrowed to standard. By the end of 1888 the railroad had been completed from Columbia to a point in Lexington County, 22 miles. Construction was done under contract by the Congaree Construction Company. In the fall of 1890 the road had reached Jalapa, SC, 43 miles, and in early 1891 it reached Dover Junction, SC, 63.50 miles. From August 1, 1890 until May 20, 1892, the company was leased to the receiver of the South Carolina Railroad. The extension to Laurens, 75 miles, was finally completed in early 1896. The line never went further than this point. By 1896 the company had come under joint control of the Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line through stock ownership. The country traversed by the railroad was generally heavily rolling. The line followed the watershed between the Broad River and the Saluda River. Farm products were the principal freight of the line. The rail on the main line was principally 56-lb. Bessemer. The bridges were metal spans over the larger streams and pile & frame trestles over the smaller streams. The most important was a 2219-ft. bridge over the Broad River. The line completely dieselized in 1953. NEW 5X8 FULL FRAME PHOTO FROM ORIGINAL 120, 616, 4x5, 5x7 OR 122 SIZE NEGATIVEs I do combine shipping on all orders.
