He was a master student of the German painter Lovis Corinth and a member of the November Group. Ernst Krantz mastered the style of Impressionism and Expressionism.Ernst Krantz was born in Bartenstein in East Prussia and grew up there with four siblings. Ernst Gottlieb Krantz was his uncle. In 1909 Ernst Krantz graduated from high school in Posen and went to Berlin. There he began studying architecture at the Technical University of Berlin. A year later he attended Lovis Corinth's private painting school and became his master student.After a first successful collective exhibition in the State Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Posen and participation in an exhibition of the Free Secession in Berlin, educational trips to Munich and Paris followed.During World War I he was a lieutenant in a machine gun company and was awarded the Iron Cross. After the end of the war, Ernst Krantz resumed his artistic activities. He became a member of the November Group and took part in their exhibitions. In addition, Krantz worked as a private drawing teacher. However, he refused a permanent position in the school service.Between 1932 and 1941, Ernst Krantz worked, with interruptions, as an assistant at the chair for free drawing and painting at the Technical University of Berlin. In 1941 he was drafted into military service as a reserve captain and was released from military service in 1944 for reasons of age.
