The following is a description of the Grand Place in Antwerp taken from Trip Advisor: Antwerp is in the province of Belgium - located on the river Scheldt - a working port linked to the North Sea. In the 1st century AD the Gallo Romans vicus (provincial) civilisation settled (pottery and glass shards excavated in the 1950/1960s). After the Romans left around 4th century AD, the Germanic tribes settled around Antwerpen. From mid 5th century to mid 8th century the Merovingians dynasty, a Salian Franks ruled for 300 years, uniting ancient Gaul and Southern Germania. Pope Zachary deposed the Merovingian ruler in 752 and at the end of the 10th century AD the town was under the Holy Roman Empire for nearly 900 years. In the 16th century Antwerpen not only became the sugar capital of Europe, importing from Portugal and Spain but had a highly efficient bourse attracting rich bankers from other parts of Europe. It's 'golden age' is also linked to the 'age of exploration' and the 'spice trade'. Must see: Grote Market/Grand Place where the City Hall, Guildhouse, Cathedral of our Lady and the statue of Barabo/fountain are. Famous people born in Antwerp: Frans Floris, Anthony Van Dyke, Jan Fyt; famous people lived in Antwerp: Van Gough, Sir Thomas Gresham, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Pieter Paul Rubens, Ford Maddox Brown to name a few.
