This was one of the regiments in the well known Wilder's Lightning Brigade. The book is filled with his letters. From a Book Review: I bought this book because my gr grandfather was in the 123rd ILL, and I am always looking for more information about what he endured during the war. Unlike letters from many soldiers, the letters give fairly detailed information about what went on day-to-day as well as battles fought, who was wounded or killed, etc. The book also contains excellent additional material putting the letters in context with what was going on at the timeFrom a Book Review: I feel like I got to know Otho McManus as a person who became my friend. I was pulling for him to make it through the Civil War, even though I learned his fate early on in this book. The editors do a great job of putting Otho's letters to his wife and daughter in perspective with events of the Civil War and on the home front. Because I live in the region where many of the soldiers of the 123rd Illinois Infantry were from, I really enjoyed getting to know of the heroic deeds and of the drudgery of camp life of these soldiers.
