Description: John Lorimer Worden [1818 1897] was a United States Navy officer in the American Civil War who took part in the Battle of Hampton Roads, Virginia on March 9, 1862. The battle was the first ever engagement between ironclad steamships, the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia. Admiral Worden was the first to command the USS Monitor, the only Union warship of this class against the Confederate vessel CSS Virginia. The CSS Virginia was a converted steam-frigate that had previously sunk a ship at a Union blockader and also damaged two others. The historic first battle of two American ironclad ships endured for four hours with both ships withdrawing after being unable to pierce the other ships armor. Listed for auction is a beautiful, framed display which contains the rare autograph of Admiral John Lorimer Worden.
