An interesting pile of fire melted camp lead, formed from melted bullets (soldiers often used cartridges as fire starters), Measuring 1 7/8" by 1 1/4" by 1/2", and weighing 2.1 ounces. This artifact was a part of the collection of the famous relic hunting pioneer, Bill Gavin, and was in a group of relics that were identified in his original display case # 147, as having been found at the Cliffside Inn, on his property on Bolivar Heights, Harper's Ferry West Virginia. Gavin owned the 'Cliffside Motel' (Also known as 'The Cliffside Inn' and 'The Cliffside Motor Inn', it changed to 'Quality Inn Cliffside', and today it still operates, but under the name 'The Clarion Inn'). A very interesting piece with great provenance! Bill Gavin was the first relic hunter to use a metal detector to search for Civil War artifacts (back in the 1940s - the first location was Cold Harbor in 1946) and amassed a huge collection of items in the decades that followed. Gavin wrote four books, including the well-know "Accoutrement Plates North and South, 1861-1865" and several articles and was well respected for his knowledge in the field. He passed away in 2010. A provenance letter will be included with this relic. Bolivar Heights 'Bolivar Heights is a plateau 668 feet (204 m) high located in Jefferson County, West Virginia, in the United States. It overlooks the towns of Harpers Ferry and Bolivar, West Virginia. During the American Civil War, it featured more fighting than any other part of Harpers Ferry. It was the site of the October 1861 Battle of Bolivar Heights, during which Confederate States Army colonel Turner Ashby failed to capture the heights from Union commander John White Geary. In 1862, the Bolivar Heights were used by Confederate general Stonewall Jackson to bombard Harpers Ferry, which was attacked during the Maryland Campaign. It was also attacked many other times, including Jubal Early's invasion of Maryland in 1864. There are cannon and a defensive trench preserved from the Civil War today, and it is one of the designated historical locations of the National Park Service, part of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. 340 Keyes Gap Rd, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425 "Fall fun begins at Cliffside-now Clarion Inn-Harper's Ferry Review of Clarion Inn Harpers Ferry - Charles Town Reviewed October 19, 2016 'No matter the Hotel Flag/Name it carries, "Cliffside Inn/Quality Inn Cliffside or now Clarion Inn, this comfortable and relaxed property, not only has it all inside, but the Room views front or back and trails in and around it are all one can ask for in a visit to Harper's Ferry area!
