ROSEVILLE HISTORY The Roseville Pottery Company was an American pottery manufacturer in the 19th and 20th centuries. Though originally it made only simple household pieces, the design of its pottery was popular with the American Arts and Crafts movement, and its pieces are now sought after by collectors. The company was founded by J.F. Weaver in Roseville, Ohio, in 1890 and incorporated in 1892 with George Young, a former Roseville salesman, as secretary and general manager. Under the direction of Young, the Roseville company had great success producing stoneware flower pots and other practical household items. By 1896 George Young had a controlling interest in Roseville Pottery. In 1898 it moved its headquarters to Zanesville, Ohio. Roseville Pottery produced its final designs in 1953, and the following year their facilities were bought by the Mosaic Tile Company. Baneda, Moss, Futura, Cosmos, Monticello, Cherry Blossom, Blackberry, Sunflower, Ferella, Velmoss, Thornapple, Topeo, and others are some of those extremely popular 'middle period' patterns produced around 1928-1940. Collectors agree that much of the best Roseville Pottery was produced during the 1920's-1930's. They came in pink and green and blue and other colors and are the most sought after and therefore are the highest priced. Many early Roseville pieces had an identifying number marked with an orange grease pencil on the bottom while others did not (though their catalogues had the model numbers). Most late 1920's and early1930's pieces were marked with an orange grease pencil, which frequently wore off. Later stickers were used. Starting in 1930 some pieces had either their number incised or later on, embossed, along with the name, "Roseville."
