Description: Back in '82 or '83 I attended the Central States coin expo in Omaha. Scores of top dealers were displaying the best coins money could buy. One of the 15 coveted 1804 Bowed Liberty dollars sold for the grand price of $200,000 -- probably worth 10-times that today. I was keen to acquire Washington quarters 1940 - 1955. I cannot recall the amount of cash I brought to the show, but I felt "flush" with a 2% bonus from my job. I purchased 99 mint state Washingtons. It was a time before third-party grading and the assignment of numerical grades per the Sheldon system. Choice and Gem Brilliant Uncirculated were the standards of excellence. I purchased only Gem BU specimens and did so very carefully one-at-a-time. I agonized over spending my hard-earned funds. Only the best condition and eye quality coins were targeted. I hit every dealer on the borse floor. Two 10-hour days were necessary to obtain my prizes. Over the years I thought about sending a few of the Washingtons to PCGS or NGC. My quarters never really appreciated in value sufficiently to warrant the cost of grading fees and shipping, however. Then this year I met John Albanese of CAC at the FUN Show in Orlando. He fast-tracked me into membership and encouraged me to "test-my-eye" with a submission of some of my Washingtons. I sent a random selection of sixteen. CAC is certainly take-it-to-the-bank tight in its appraisals. A small array of my Gem Washingtons did achieve 65 grades. The remainder all scored 64. I studied each of my CACG coins carefully with the intention of applying its standards to my remaining Washingtons. I had to re-label a few of my holders thereafter, but I was rather satisfied with my performance those 40 years ago. Choice condition large cents are now my collecting focus, so I hope these Washingtons will generate needed funds. If you make a purchase here, I am confident stating that should you decide to submit some for third-party grading, they will be returned at or above my numerical grade. Remember, buy the coin and not the slab. Priced to sell. .
