Description: I list under both "gamboa" and "chde_992" eBay user names, so look at both! This is an historic item, a Canal Zone 69, the 2c Arms of Panama stamp of 1924, on a small cover (reduced at left) from Nathan Levy of the Canal Zone Stamp Company in Gatun, postmarked February 16, 1924. This is just 4 days after the earliest known use at this point, and IS the earliest known use outside of Balboa and Cristobal. For a number of years, it was not known when this issue, CZ 68-9, was issued, though it was known that the unoverprinted Panama issue came out later than the CZ issue. In recent years, examples have been located postmarked on February 12th and 13th. Still, this is very early for a issue 100 years ago and, as stated above, is the earliest from Gatun or other post offices in the "hinterland." Light vertical bend in center with hints of a rubber band mark, and some light soiling and edge wear. Still, unusual and rare, a wonderful addition to a Canal Zone postal history collection. Please add $1.50 postage within the US; international postage $2. We combine shipping, so buy some other of our items!
