Native American Inuit performing the ritual drum dance commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Nunavut Province on this solid gold proof finish coin! In the Inuit language (Inuktitut), "Nunavut" means "our land." To Inuit, land is not something that is controlled or owned. It is a relationship—like an unbreakable bond between a newborn and its mother. For thousands of years, Inuit and their ancestors lived as nomads, eternally linked to the rhythm of the land and the seasons, moving from place to place as they followed the migratory patterns of caribou, seals, fish and birds. Their relationship with the land and wildlife around them became the very essence of their culture. Contact with European explorers dramatically altered this way of life. Yet, after hundreds of years of change, the contemporary members of this ancient people came together to reclaim their past and preserve it for the future. In 1973, they began a study to demonstrate the extent of Inuit aboriginal title in the Arctic; the basis of their land claim that would follow. Twenty-five years later, the Nunavut Act was adopted and received Royal Assent on July 9, 1998. Then, on April 1, 1999, people coast to coast celebrated Canada's youngest territory as Nunavut officially joined the federation of Canada. No doubt, the Inuit celebrated the event with many a drum dance; a ritual that is as much a part of their cultural fabric as the land that surrounds them. The drum dance recounts people's experiences; tells stories and dreams; preserves ancestral wisdom and values. It is a living bond between those who have walked before us - and those who are yet to come. About the Artist Andrew Qappik was born February 25, 1964, in Nunataq, Nunavut. This Native American artist is a Canadian citizen and a member of the Inuit people who currently resides in Pangnirtung, Nunavut. Qappik is known for his printmaking and his contribution to the Nunavut Coat of arms. He designed the polar bear logo used by the Government of Nunavut, and advised the Chief Herald of Canada on Nunavut’s coat-of-arms and flag. Qappik's artwork depicts both animals and scenes of traditional Inuit culture; these draw on his own personal experiences as an Inuit, as well as stories by his grandfathers, other relatives and elders. Some of these relatives have been an influence on Qappik's artistic sensibilities. He has a fondness for realistic forms and naturalistic scenes of Arctic life; an instinctive grasp of line, form and composition; and a use of lighter colored tones with little negative space. Qappik's work is exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Canada and the United States. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and in 2003 he received the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal. Andrew Qappik is also the designer of the Canada 2011 Mother and Child $3 Silver Proof. Obverse Three representative faces of the Native American Inuit people gaze out from the surface of this coin, while centered within is a native dancer performing the ritual drum dance. The double date commemoration 1999-2009 and the denomination are also indicated. Reverse Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in profile facing right.
