This species thrives in warm climates and is well-suited to USDA Zones 9-11. In the desert it grows best with some protection from hard frosts and afternoon sun. I fell in love with these plants after seeing them grown as courtyard plants in Tucson. It features striking spherical flower heads that resemble powder puffs, with vibrant red or pink hues. The blooms typically appear in spring and summer, though in favorable conditions, they may continue to bloom sporadically throughout the year. Calliandra haematocephala is a popular choice for gardens and landscapes, attracting pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies with its abundant blossoms. It prefers moderate irrigation and should be planted in well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging.Deep intermittent irrigation can provoke an amazing symphony of blossoms in even extreme Southwest desert conditions. Prefers good drainage. It loves the desert sand but can grow in a wide range of soils and alkalinities. Intense drought without supplemental water can cause dieback, while rains can provoke more blooms.Good drainage is essential for this plant to thrive. It needs low amounts of supplemental water once established. Irrigate by watering deeply and then allowing the top several inches of soil to dry between waterings. This encourages the plant to send roots deep into the earth in search of moisture, helping it to become established, prevent root rot, build drought tolerance, and resilience to heat and cold. The length of time between waterings will vary depending on your growing conditions and environment. These plants are sold for the purposes of ornamental cultivation.
