Obviously, railroads in the San Francisco Bay Area are located in areas that are subject to tidal action as are to a lesser extent the railroads that reached the Stockton waterfront. I have also limited the scope of the book to railroads that have had a connection with the Western Pacific, either through marine service or by a direct rail connection. With the exception of the major interurban lines, the railroads discussed in these pages have appeared only in rail enthusiast periodicals; information on them is difficult to locate. I have not attempted to do a nutsand-bolts history of these railroad lines, but I wanted to give the reader some basic background to support and explain the photographs. When the Tidewater Southern, Central California Traction and Stockton Terminal & Eastern reached the Stockton waterfront between 1910 and 1912, they found the Alameda & San Joaquin, Southern Pacific and Santa Fe already there. This led to some joint trackage arrangements and some jockeying for the remaining wharf locations. River boats were docking in Stockton as early as 1848, bringing gold prospectors and their supplies to the southern mines. Just prior to World War II, the channel into what is now Stockton Harbor was dredged and opened to ocean-going ships. With the advent of good roads, the private automobile took most of the passenger traffic and trucks took the short haul freight tonnage, leaving the shortline railroads as feeders to the long-haul carriers (Southern Pacific, Western Pacific and the Santa Fe). Early in the Twentieth Century, the three Stockton-area shortlines realized that their future lay in freight hauling-not passengers-and they re-focused their attention, serving the Harbor and the long-haul carriers. Decisions made years ago guaranteed their future into the 215C Century. The four railroads covered in the Bay Area are switching railroads called belt lines or terminal railroads. They received or ship cars to and from the major carriers via car barges or by direct interchange tracks. They supplied switching service for customers not served directly by the major railroads. The Oakland Terminal operates today at a reduced capacity; the San Francisco Belt is in a new port location and has completely re-configured its business model. The Howard Terminal and the Alameda Belt Line no longer exist. It was my good fortune to visit and photograph these interesting railroads in their prosperous, busy days. I would hope that this book will inspire others to give these obscure organizations the historical research they deserve. All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage. If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad.
