"Bones And I" is a book written by GeorgeJohn Whyte-Melville, an English novelist and poet who was popular during the19th century. The book was first published in 1868 and is a novel about an urban recluse who lives in a small, modern villa within a London cul de sac, overlooking 'the dead wall' at the back of an hospital. On first residing there he felt a little lonely and depressed, and so brought home “Bones” to come and live with him. Bones is a “well-formed and very complete skeleton”, with which he analyses and discusses a collection of short stories, contemplations, and observations. GeorgeJohn Whyte-Melville, commonly known as Whyte-Melville, was a British novelist and poet born on June 19, 1821, in Gogar Bank, Midlothian, Scotland. Whyte-Melville's works enjoyed popularity during his lifetime, particularly among readers who shared his passion for hunting, horse riding, and the sporting lifestyle and this, although this book departs from this theme, it is an intriguing read. Ironically,Whyte Melville lost his life in 1878, whilst riding a horse, during the Vale ofWhite Horse Hunt. This book was published by Ward, Lock & Bowden, Limited, Warwick House, Salisbury Square, London, with offices in New York and Melbourne. This book is not dated; however, I can date it to between approximately 1893 and 1897 for the following reasons: In 1878, the publisher built a new office called ‘Warwick House’. In 1882 offices were opened in New York City, and in 1884 in Melbourne. In the mid-1890s they opened an Office in Toronto, Canada, which is not mentioned on the title page of this book, and so this edition pre-dates this. 1891, James Bowden came into a three-way partnership. He had started working at Ward and Lock in 1869 and after he became a partner, the company became Ward, Lock and Bowden and then in 1893 it was converted into a limited company and became Ward Lock and Bowden Ltd. James Bowden retired in 1897 and by 1901 the firm went by Ward, Lock & Co., Limited. This is in red half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. The spine is panelled, with gilt decoration and lettering. The cover is intact and robust. There is a little wear to the cover, more-so to the edges, corners, and on the spine, where there is a small hole in the leather, near to the top. There is also some fading to the leather on the spine, and some small or light marks. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further reference. Inside, there are light marks on the endpapers, but besides this, the pages are in an overall very neat, clean, and uncreased state and are without rips. Some of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. On the front pastedown there is an ex libris plate pasted for “William Bruce Reid”. However, there are no further pen or pencil marks written inside this book. The pages are tightly bound. There are no missing pages and so all 287 pages are present. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This really is a lovely example of this book. This measures approximately 18.5 cm by 12.7 cm and 2.6 cm wide. It weighs approximately 472 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
