Description: This is an original antique c.1850 trade card for the noted Sheffield, England tool making firm of W. & S. Butcher. This trade card advertises the W. & S. Butcher sales offices in the United States and is printed on coated ivory cardstock measuring about 4.5” x 2.75”. Text on the card reads: W. & S. Butcher Sheffield, England Manufacturers of Blister, Bar and Tilted Cast Steel, Cast Steel in Sheets, Files, Edge Tools and the Celebrated Razors & Pocket Knives stamped Wade & Butcher – Office in New York, Frances Speir, 54 Beekman St. – Office in Philadelphia, Robert Wade, 27th North 5th St. This card isn’t dated but William and Samuel Butcher opened their Philadelphia office around 1842 and this card probably dates to around 1850 or so. W. & S. Butcher are recognized as one of the most important tool makers in Sheffield, England with origins dating back to the Industrial Revolution. Wade & Butcher captured a large market share for straight razors in the United States by the mid 19th century and also made pocketknives. This antique original trade card has some staining and was removed a scrapbook and some paper remnant of the scrapbook page is still adhered to the back of the card.
