The background is cleverly painted with a slightly parted red curtain revealing a landscape behind. It is mounted within a gold gilt frame, with rolled gold back and brooch pin. Background:Charles Foot Tayler (1794-1853) was active on the Isle of Wight where he was born, and later in Bath. He is known for exceedingly realistic portraits, accomplished painting of lace, and also frequently uses this unusual style of background. He signed his works on the reverse, however it is not possible to examine this, without causing potential damage to the frame.
