Description: Handwritten ManuscriptRegarding the Bishop of Landaff'sLetter to the Archbishop of Canterbury~ Church Finances ~ "Bishop of Landaff's letter to the Abp [Archbishop] of Canterbury page 27 2d edition 'The revenue of the Church of E. is not I think well understood in general; at least, I have met with a great many very sensible men, of all professions & ranks, who did not well understand it They have expressed a surprise, bordering on disbelief, when I have ventured to assure them, the whole income of the Church including Bishops, priests, Deans & Chaplains, rectories, vicarages...and benefices of all kinds, and even the two Universities, with their supportive Colleges, which being Lay-corporations, ought not to be taken into the amount, did not amount, upon the most liberal calculation to £1500,000 pounds a year.....'" The letter being written about in this handwritten manuscript is the noted letter written to the Archbishop of Canterbury by the Bishop of Landaff (Richard Cumberland) regarding the Church's finances. The letter caused a hubbub, and was issued in book form in 1783. This undated document in which the book is quoted seems to be from a similar time period - the old laid paper and the ink speak of the late 1700s. Couple of tears at fold-lines and some age-wear, fairly easy to read, a lovely hand. It seems as if someone was taking notes on the book at hand.
