Title: DRILLING REPORT SAM OVERTON 137 ACRE FEE LEASE RUSK COUNTY, TEXAS [caption title] Publication: Dallas, Texas: C.A. Everts, Drilling Contractor, 1935 Description: Reproduced typescript, 5 pp., plus a copy of the plat map showing the Everts Drilling Co. acreage in East Texas, surrounded by parcels owned by Marathon Oil, Sun Oil, Humble Oil, Shell, etc. Creased from folding, else very good. A promotional letter, the first page on letterhead for C.A. Everts, Drilling Contractor, Dallas, dated Sept. 3, 1935, addressed to "My Friend and Backer." Everts mentions the pamphlet he had recently sent regarding the new Sam Overton lease and the "outstanding good chance of being powerful big flowing well oil land." He encourages his correspondent to send in a subscription promptly to help finance the first well which is already down 650 feet. He is convinced that in no time they will be getting $2 a barrel for every barrel of oil they can produce. He often emphasizes his enthusiasm with capital letters and is undeterred by the difficulties presented by the bayou country. Signed in blue pencil [secretarial?] by Everts on page 5. The discovery of a vast oil field in East Texas, and Rush County in 1930 led to a rush of leases on land in the area. Many small landowners carved up their holdings offering them to both major oil companies and independent oilmen for development. A history of the East Texas oilfield in the Handbook of Texas online details the "unconventional development" of the area, and the rise and regulation of the industry from the 1930s on.
