Description: Up for sale is an iconic piece of baseball history in the form of an authentic wool hand stitched baseball pennant representing the Detroit Tigers club. Some might say how can this truly be associated with the legendary team spearheaded by one Ty Cobb and that I will get to within the description and investigations over the past few months. Measuring in at a whopping 58.5” from edge to tip this felt flag also includes its original multi colored triple set of dual tassels that measure 8.5” each (making this one 67” overall - over 5ft) The spectacular horizontal dual stitched design matches smaller/older examples with same multi colored tassels , split color orange/black design and gothic script lettering. A wonderful recommendation for certainty and history is to go to Mark Steinberg’s The Stuff Of Greatness (TSOG) youtube channel. There you can visit episode 4 that shows the tiger head on an oversized Detroit baseball version from 1906-08, but also be able to view numerous historical baseball memorabilia videos that all must see. Although this banner does not retain its original makers mark it is clear that TSOG’s early 1900’s version comes from the same manufacturer due to font, coloring and custom dual sided stitching. The reason I am going with 1917 is a two fold approach and the first being these excessive sized banners came out at the tail of World War I (1914-18) as noted within Pennantfever (dot) com’s pure history of pennant manufacturing. The last tidbit can be found with the gothic bars within the “D” in Detroit. If you look closely at TSOG’s pennant all script is alike except for the inner “D” which takes us to another exceptional site within Chris Creamer’s Sportslogo (dot) net site. From the years of 1904-1907 the tigers used a single talon coming off the middle of left side of the “D” and once again in 1917. Could this be an earlier version?…possibly if we can pinpoint the manufacturer, but I’m sticking with my date here based on all the knowledge and history from the three aforementioned sites. Please resort to the pictures provided for overall quality as this original banner emboldens the days of Hall Of Fame outfielders Harry Heilmann and one Tyrus Cobb (throw in a little Sam Crawford as well). No signs of pinning within the tassel elements nor the its base as original stitching and sharp endpoint are all strong in nature. There is no fading from front portions to backside, but light soiling (on front left) can easily be professionally cleaned, but clearly doesn’t affect the sheer magnitude of adding to one’s collection. There are no signs of pinning, tears or holes within as well. Please note that this lot only consists of the oversized Detroit banner as one of my pics shows a standard and oversized example to the show exact size one will receive. Due to magnitude in size this item will ship rolled up with protective inlay and free of charge (I will choose between UPS or FedEx ground service). Please feel free to send any questions my way or if any additional information is needed. Be sure to check out all my other sports memorabilia lots posting over the upcoming weeks
