Description: Montana authors Bill and Jan Taylor presented this history of the Northern Pacific’s entry into Butte by way of a 70 mile (the "short line" in the title) from Logan, MT. When building their mainline through this part of southwest Montana, the NP decided to bypass Butte, by building from Bozeman via Logan to Helena and continuing west. That placed the line some forty miles to the north of Butte. The NP also chose that route because the Continental Divide stood in their way and Helena offered a lower route after the completion of Mullan Tunnel, which replaced going over Mullan Pass. But within just a few years, Butte exploded with growth, becoming the “Richest Hill on Earth.” By 1886, the NP had finally located a route to tap Butte via Homestake Pass and thus the Butte Short Line was born.
