BSA Boy Scout 1960's Indian Legend WALCO BEADCRAFT THUNDERBIRD Bracelet Arm Band

Description: WANT IT NOW? WHY WAIT?? BUY IT NOW!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MY AUCTION THIS AUCTION IS FOR BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA 1960's, NATIVE AMERICAN LEGEND NEAR 60+ YEARS AGO INDIAN TOTEM "THUNDERBIRD" MADE WITH WALCO BEADCRAFT LOOM BRACELET / ARM BAND One of the most common arts and crafts practiced by multiple Native American tribes included the decorative use of beads of various types. Generations before Europeans landed on the shores of the new world, Native American beadwork used primarily stone, shell, quills, and bone carved patiently with non-metal tools. As the decades went by and new materials like metal and glass were introduced by the new people arriving on the shores, the beadwork patterns used on clothing, jewelry, and decorations became much more intricate and stylized. Native American beaded patterns became a symbol of wealth, were used in marriage ceremonies, trade agreements, and treaties. Some beadwork patterns involve ritualistic use and were often used in spiritual dances and celebrations. INDIAN LEGENDTHUNDERBIRD A "totem" is a symbol used by Native American families or clans. Each group used a different animal for its totem. The word "totem" came from a word that meant, "to be related to someone," and totem poles became an important part of Native American culture since they had no written history. "THUNDERBIRD" LEGEND The thunderbird is a legendary creature in certain North American indigenous peoples' history and culture. It is considered a supernatural being of power and strength. It is especially important, and frequently depicted, in the art, songs and oral histories of many Pacific Northwest Coast cultures, but is also found in various forms among some peoples of the American Southwest, East Coast of the United States, Great Lakes, and Great Plains. This auction is for a very unique BSA Indian jewelry, decorative wear. It is a beaded bracelet with the legendary Thunderbird image formed into the beadwork. This was accomplished by using a Walco Beadcraft kit. It had the loom, thread, beads and instructions how to make the arm band. It is accurate in its portrayal of the Thunderbird image and decorative designs. The only blemish, it was made with elastic thread which was not available at the local tribal Walmart in the early frontier days. But it does make the bracelet more versatile. Walco Bead Co. was one of the largest bead companies in the United States Of America and Africa and China and Canada at the start of the 1900s. It was a landmark in New York's "bead alley" at 37 West 37th Street. Walco's technique in marketing was to manufacture bead kits to encourage adults and children to make projects. Many styles of these kits were available, mainly Indian beading belts. In the 1930s, with the addition of the "Official Boy Scout Beadcraft Outfit", all kits came with fully illustrated, easy-to-read instructions, "Walco Indian Bead Loom". With this complete beadcraft outfit you can make a variety of colorful Indian belts, rings, neckerchief slides, and other beautiful beaded objects. If you collect BOY or GIRL SCOUT STUFF, UNIFORMS, MEDALS, PINS, EQUIPMENT OR LITERATURE you might want to place me in your "FAVORITES" list for the next few months to keep track of these auctions. I have just begun to list similar sets from a collector's hoard dating from the 1920's. I will be listing new lots weekly in the coming months. This collection belonged to a life-long Scouter who passed away in 2000. He earned his Eagle award about the age of 17, which would make it around 1959 (ish). He spent his life devoted to Scouting serving as Scoutmaster and at Boy Scout summer camps for over 15 years in positions from counselor to eventually camp director. He was a ten year member and Vice President of the local Volunteer Fire Co., ten year member of the area Hazardous Materials Response Team and the town Tax Payers Association and was an Eagle Scout with Gold & Silver Palms, one of the highest ranks in Scouting. A bronze palm represents five additional merit badges, a gold palm 10, and a silver palm 15. 1 gold palm and 1 silver palm = 46 total merit badges (21 required + 25 additional) I cannot divulge his identity because I don't have the family's permission, nor sufficient background information on him. Condition: This historic bracelet / arm band is already about 60 years old. It is still in very good condition for its age. See pics. As such, they are offered "AS IS, NO RETURNS, NO REFUNDS.
