Description: DESCRIPTIONBritish Army--WW2 EraNo.2:Service dress (temperate parade uniform)- HistoryPhysical descriptionSingle-breasted jacket of khaki whipcord featuring an open notched collar, four button fastening with a press-stud closing at the waist, button-down shoulder epaulettes, two pleated breast pockets of patch form with scalloped button flaps, two large skirt pockets of bellows form with rectangular button flaps, two rear metal belt hooks, rear vent, leather elbow pads and trimming to the cuffs. All buttons are brass West Riding regimental pattern. Internally there is a shell dressing pocket to the lower right inside facing and a horizontal slash pocket to the right side. Attached the collar points are bronzed West Riding Regiment collar badges, while directly below are bronzed 'T' titles. Sewn to the upper shoulders is the cloth formation badge of the 17th (Northern) Division, being a horizontal red rectangle with a broken white line, while directly below is sewn the cloth formation badge of the 9th (Service) Battalion, being a vertical maroon rectangle. Sewn to the right forearm are four blue overseas service chevrons on khaki backing. To the cuffs are three-point false 'slash' flaps outlined in khaki chevron braiding, with worsted rank insignia of three stars sewn inside, denoting the rank of Captain. Running perpendicular to the flaps are two rings of the same braiding. The jacket has several minor repairs and wear from active service.History noteThe 9th (Service) Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment, was formed at Halifax in September 1914 as part of the 52nd Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division, under the K2 'New' Army Group. In July 1915, the Brigade landed at Boulogne-sur-Mer for service on the Western Front and saw active service there for the rest of the war. The owner of the jacket, Captain Kenneth Beaumont Mackenzie, was promoted from Private to Second Lieutenant in March 1915, transferring from the 1st West Riding Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, to the 7th Battalion, West Riding Regiment. At some point he transferred to the 9th (Service) Battalion, and in August 1915 he disembarked for France, where he remained until the end of the war. He took part in the Battle of Arras in April 1917 as well as the retreat from Cambrai in March 1918, when he was Officer in Command of D Company. Mackenzie was Gazetted for the Military Cross on 26 July 1918, the entry reading: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in command of a company, when it was owing to his good leadership that, in spite of an intense bombardment, his command was withdrawn from a dangerous and exposed position with very few casualties. He set a fine example of courage and greatly inspired his men.' Mackenzie's private papers, which include letters, photographs, drawings and his notebook in which he had drawn several trench diagrams, are held by Documents under Documents.7116.For sale--Service Dress Uniform from the Duke of Wellington Regiment includes 2 trousers (1 khaki wool & other navy w/ red stripe). Regimental distinctions worn on No.2 dress can include collar badges (sometimes with colored cloth backings), colored lanyards worn on the shoulder & arm badges.Regimental buttons are worn; for most units, these are of gold color. The buttons on this uniform are engraved Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Reg. Every regular army soldier is issued with one suit of No.2 dress.
