Description: SALE: $2 OFF ORIGINAL PRICE!!! GHOUL WARNINGand Other Omens... and Other Omens by BRIAN LUMLEYProfusely illustrated byDonald W. SchankPublished jointly byW. Paul Ganley: Publisher andNecronomicon Press First American Edition trade paperback (limited to 800 copies) {1999} Brian Lumley may perhaps best known to the public as a writer of horror fiction, particularly influenced by H. P. Lovecraft. He wrote the Cthulhu Mythos (Titus Crow) books, and the Necroscope books, and many many more. Possibly many people, even many of his readers, will be unaware that he is also a poet. Most of this material was originally published in England by Jon Harvey's Spectre Press (and out of print copies are quite expensive). Since it was so long out of print, and almost unobtainable, we decided to reprint it in the US, with some added material (which explains the additional "and Other Omens" at the end of the title). Most of it is verse, although there are three short stories (very short: 50 words each). And Lumley's poetry mostly definitely is weird, indicated by such titles as Da Vinci's Ghost, Last of the Lizards, and the title poem, Ghoul Warning. This was published by two small presses working together: W. Paul Ganley: Publisher and Necronomicon Press. The artwork includes 11 interior black and white full page illustrations by Donald W. Schank... who was really the moving force behind getting this reprinted in the US,, as you will see if you read the amusing preface. This print run was 800 copies. (We also did a hard cover edition, but it has been out of print for a long time.) A third printing of this book was done by PS Publishing (a special hard cover version). Nevertheless, the item being offered here is the first American edition in paperback. The first photograph shows the cover, of course. New photographs have been added to show something of the artist's work (he did 11 interiors altogether). Here are a couple of reviews snatched from the internet: • Ghoul Warning has always been something of a holy grail for Lumley fans. Its title appeared in the 'By the same author' page of Brian's books for years, but was never to be found in high street book stores. The advent of the internet made tracking down a copy easier, yet at the same time more costly, as the wider audience enabled a higher price to be set for a strictly low-print-run collectible. • The first section of the book is labelled ‘Acrostics’ and consists of short poems in which the first letters of each line spell out the title. Most of these are inspired by Lovecraft’s mythos (e.g. ‘Tindalos’, ‘Kadath’) and while at times they seem rather stretched for effect, portentous and cumbersome, mostly the poems paint evocative word pictures with a sound command of language and effective, apart from the occasional misstep, use of alliteration to enhance the musicality of the verse. The second section, aptly titled ‘Stories’, to my mind worked much better, with each verse having a little tale to tell, the skeleton of what, in other circumstances, might be developed into one of Lumley’s works of fiction. And without the burden of having the first letter of the next line pre-determined, Lumley’s language is far more engaging and natural sounding, with all the virtues of the previous section and few of the vices, effortlessly drawing the reader into the world of the poem. Poe is as much an influence here as Lovecraft, with deft touches of the macabre and black comedy all part of the mix. For the third section we get ‘Odds and Ends’, with a mix of poems that are mainly word pictures, and some of them very funny, as with the sly ‘Ghoul Warning’ and the delightful ‘Good God! – Goodrod’. By way of a final trump there are three 50 word stories…. this is an entertaining collection, showcasing the author’s abilities, but also rather slight and one which will probably appeal most to collectors, fans of genre verse and Lumley completists.
