Description: • • • • • • • See our listings: CARICATURES and THEATRE FOLK and RARE REPRINTS and NUDES • • • • • • • • • Rare illustration of BORIS KARLOFF [1887 — 1969] sketched in Hollywood in 1946 by Alex Gard, who was eating in Chasen's restaurant at the time. • • Born in London, England, Boris Karloff [23 November 1887 — 2 February 1969], whose real name was William Henry Pratt, was a British actor who emigrated to Canada in the 1910s. • • Boris Karloff is best remembered for his roles in horror films and his portrayal of Frankenstein's monster in the 1931 film Frankenstein, 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein, and 1939 film Son of Frankenstein. • • In 1944, Boris Karloff played Dr. Gustav Niemann in "House of Frankenstein," an American monster horror film that also had Lon Chaney in the cast (as a wolf man); it was a sequel to "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" the previous year. • • In 1946, "Bedlam" was released [set during 1761 in London] starring Boris Karloff and Anna Lee. This horror film inspired by the notorious British insane asylum was the last in a series of stylish B films produced by Val Lewton for RKO Radio Pictures. • • • • Chasen's • • • • • • For three decades, Chasen's had been a well-known restaurant in West Hollywood, California that was a hangout for entertainment luminaries. Located at 9039 Beverly Boulevard in Beverly Hills, it was the site of the Academy Awards party for many years and was also known for its chili. • • The restaurant was opened in December 1936 by the vaudevillian Dave Chasen at the advice of his friend, director Frank Capra. • • • • • • ALEXIS K. GARD • • • • • • • • Born in Russia, Alex Gard [1900 — 1 June 1948] was a cartoonist and an illustrator who specialized in vaudevillians and theatre people. Alex Gard contributed weekly drawings to the drama section of The New York Herald Tribune.
