The compact, installer-friendly Bluesound POWERNODE Edge makes it easy — just add your favorite pair of speakers, download an app for your phone, and you're ready to enjoy a huge selection of streaming and digital music sources in clear, hi-fi detail. The POWERNODE Edge features a built-in high-performance stereo amplifier that delivers 40 watts per channel into 8 ohms. And it's stable down to 4 ohms, expanding your options to a wide range of compatible speakers. Versatile configurations You can use the POWERNODE Edge with a wired subwoofer (or wireless PULSE SUB+) for a great-sounding, compact 2.1 stereo system. Or use it to power the rear channels of a wireless Bluesound 4.1 surround sound system. An HDMI eARC port means you can even connect your compatible TV and enjoy bigger sound with shows and movies. This amp's compact design makes it an easy addition to most systems, even in tight spaces. For custom installations, it mounts in a 1U/half-rack space or in vertical or horizontal orientation on your wall with the included four-way bracket. A wide variety of music options The POWERNODE Edge can play just about any digital music you might have in your collection, including high-resolution files up to 24-bit/192kHz. Access the music stored on your computer or a networked hard drive, or tap into internet radio stations and online streaming services like Spotify®, Qobuz, and TIDAL (subscription required for some services). And you can use the POWERNODE Edge to enjoy your SiriusXM subscription. You can also enjoy downloads from high-res music sites such as HDtracks. The POWERNODE Edge also features a USB input for playing files from a thumb drive or external hard drive. At home with the POWERNODE Edge I've been using Bluesound/BluOS at my house for a couple years now. I wanted to try the POWERNODE Edge for a very specific purpose — more precise control and a neater installation in my somewhat unique home stereo setup. In our open floor plan, we've got two pairs of speakers firing in opposite directions around a central double-sided fireplace: a larger pair of living room speakers powered by an NAD C700 integrated amp with built-in BluOS, and a smaller pair of KEF Q150s for the kitchen. I run this second pair on a small power amp, Parasound's Zamp, connected to the C700's preamp output. In this scenario, I don't have independent volume control, and I can't run the kitchen system alone. Compact design and wireless connectivity Using the POWERNODE Edge for this second pair of speakers helped make my system much more flexible. This smallest version of Bluesound's streaming amp is about the same dimensions as the Zamp – roughly the size of a hardback book. And thanks to its built-in wireless streaming, I didn't even need an RCA cable to connect it, just AC power and speaker cables. Now I've got independent volume control and I can play the kitchen system by itself. Perfect power for a stereo pair or TV And it sounds great. Now I can push the KEFs until they give up the goods, with or without the larger living room speakers. It performed admirably with all kinds of music, from Sleep's electric sludge metal to Telemann's Fantasias for solo viola da gamba. It's so easy to see (and hear) how this compact streaming amp would also be a simple and effective way to get great sound in a small or medium-sized room like a den. You could even connect your TV to the POWERNODE Edge's eARC HDMI port. Get "appy" This experiment had the positive side-effect of making me take a closer look at Bluesound's BluOS app. I usually default to using AirPlay 2 to group the different BluOS devices in my multi-room network. That works pretty well, but AirPlay has slightly delayed playback control: like when you press “play,” it takes a few seconds for the music to start. And the AirPlay interface has imprecise volume control — one notch up can make it too loud, and one notch down can make it too quiet. Also, my AirPlay connection invariably gets lost if I go out, even just to walk the dog around the block, so I end up spending an annoying amount of time reconnecting. Using the BluOS Controller app in my multi-room system, commands are snappy and responsive, and the volume fades up and down in small, precise increments, so I can get it just right. Plus, even if I drive into town, when I come back from being away, my last settings are still in place. But the bottom line for me is that when I have to return the sample POWERNODE Edge that Bluesound generously loaned to Crutchfield for testing, I'll miss it. I've already started saving up for one of my own. Wired and wireless connectivity The POWERNODE Edge uses dual-band Wi-Fi to ensure a stable connection to your router and other Bluesound components. You can also make a wired gigabit Ethernet connection. Built-in two-way aptX® HD Bluetooth gives you high-quality sound with compatible devices. You can stream audio to the POWERNODE Edge via Bluetooth from your smartphone or tablet. Or listen to music from the POWERNODE Edge on your wireless Bluetooth headphones. Compatible with AirPlay 2 The POWERNODE Edge has Apple Airplay 2 built in for streaming audio directly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or Mac® computer. And that includes soundtracks from YouTube® videos and Netflix movies. Intuitive control You can control the POWERNODE Edge — and your Bluesound multi-room system — right from your smartphone. Simply download the free BluOS app from the Apple® App Store or Google Play. Plus, the POWERNODE Edge is compatible with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. That means once you set it up, you can control your music just by speaking into your Amazon Echo or Google voice controller (sold separately). Create a high-resolution multi-room music system
