Description: Smithsonite with Baryte Kelly Mine, Magdalena Mining District, Socorro County, New Mexico ~ 3 x 3 x 5 cm, 52.6 grams This is a nice hand sample of translucent blue smithsonite with minor baryte from one of the world's most renowned localities for smithsonite. It is uncleaned / natural, which is somewhat unusual for Kelly specimens. They are more often heavily etched / cleaned to remove mineralization and make the desirable scintillating luster. Ex. FGMS About the deposit: The Kelly mine is a former lode Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au mine located 5.1 km SE of Magdalena, near the headwaters of Kelly Gulch. The mine was discovered and first produced in 1878. It closed to commercial ore mining in 1957. Mineralization is hosted in the Kelly Limestone of the Magdalena Group (359-331 Ma). Ore emplacement occurred when hydrothermal activity / mineralized solutions rose along fractures and replaced favorable host rock, circa 29-26 Ma.
