Description: Additional Information from InnerSleeve Product Description Bill Bruford's Earthworks: Bill Bruford (keyboards, acoustic & electronic drums, percussion); Iain Ballamy (soprano, alto, tenor & baritone saxophones, didgeridoo); Django Bates (pocket trumpet, tenor horn, keyboards); Tim Harries (acoustic & fretless basses). Additional personnel: Adam Moseley (programming). Recorded at Jam (South West) Studios, Cornwall, England. Bruford's jazz-fusion in the late '80s/early '90s with his urbane ensemble Earthworks (unlike his late '70s prog outfit) is a more stylized beast, more learned in the art of swing than synth. DIG? is distinctly British-sounding, thanks largely to Bruford's employ of horn-players Iain Bellamy and Django Bates, two veterans of a number of notable English trad jazz/swing bands. Bruford's mates merge their swing with the midi-linked thrust and parry of the former King Crimson drummer's pads. Thus, we get the swinging funk and high-toned strut of "Stromboli Licks," a suggestive saunter on "Gentle Persuasion," and the hydra-headed improv feast of "A Stone's Throw," pitting Bates' and Bellamy's horns head-to-head with Bruford's clattering kit, before saxes and lulling keys melt the tempo down. No guitars here, folks, and none necessary--the horns infiltrate the jazz bloodstream, the drums kick rock's derriere, and soon we're off to the races, watching Bruford's happy re-investigation of his British jazz roots with devilish glee.
