Description: Beyond the Hundredth Meridian: John Wesley Powell and the Second Opening of the West by Wallace Stegner ***One of Stegner’s most famous works in beautiful NEAR MINT condition*** Condition: NEAR FINE/NEAR FINE Published in 1954 by Houghton Mifflin in Boston. In original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering. In original dust jacket. First edition, first printing. Octavo, [xxiii]; 458 pp (including index). Illustrated with maps and photos, including a long pull-out panorama map of the Grand Canyon. In Beyond the Hundredth Meridian, Wallace Stegner recounts the sucesses and frustrations of John Wesley Powell, the distinguished ethnologist and geologist who explored the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon, and the homeland of Indian tribes of the American Southwest. A prophet without honor who had a profound understanding of the American West, Powell warned long ago of the dangers economic exploitation would pose to the West and spent a good deal of his life overcoming Washington politics in getting his message across. Only now, we may recognize just how accurate a prophet he was. Wallace Earle Stegner (February 18, 1909 – April 13, 1993) was an American novelist, writer, environmentalist, and historian. He was often called "The Dean of Western Writers". He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 (Angle of Repose) and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977 (The Spectator Bird). Book Condition Info: NEAR FINE. Firm binding, tight pages, colorful, clean boards. Some nominal rubbing to extremities and a few marks on the rear endpapers and a faint stain on title page else FINE. Internally has bright, white pages and no writing, bookplates or foxing. A superior copy. The unclipped dust jacket is also NEAR FINE - beautiful cover art, unfaded, with minor edge wear rubbing and chipping, mostly to spine tips and corners. Looks quite lovely in its archival mylar wrap. A superior example! Overall, the highest graded collectible copy I currently see on the market. Please view pictures as they are an important part of the condition description and book information.
