Here is another of our prized offerings: * This cold loving perennial mix thrives in the cool Spring temperatures! * Bergamot is a very cold tolerant native plant to the United States, and is a member of the mint family, and is said to be an effective mosquito repellent. * Bergamot is commonly referred to as Bee Balm or the Butterfly plant because it attracts a wide range of pollinators!! I like to call it the hummingbird plant because they seem to adore this plant, especially the gorgeous ruby throated hummingbird! * It is also called Oswego Tea and Bergamot because the fragrance of the leaves is similar to bergamot orange is very fragrant. * The crushed leaves of Bergamot create a fragrant and spicy essential oil. Wikipedia reports that Monarda didyma contains the highest concentration of oil. * Wikipedia also reports that "The Native Americans, including Blackfoot, Ojibwa, Menominee, and Winnebago tribes used it extensively. In fact, the Blackfoot realized early on that Monarda possesses antiseptic abilities and used it for the treatment of cuts. That property, supposedly, is linked to the strong antiseptic Thymol found in high concentrations within this plant. " * Thymol, again found in Bergamot, is used extensively in mouthwashes today. * The Native Americans also used Bergamot as a carminative herb to prevent excessive flatulence and even used it to treat various body pains. * Bergamot has also been used by various tribes as a stimulant. * Bergamot is widespread thoughout the U.S. and can be seen growing in areas possessing an abundance of sun, moist and well-drained soil. In particular, this plant can be seen growing in hillsides, meadows and even high elevations. * Bergamot can be grown throughout the landscape including plant beds, containers, window boxes and will tolerate partial shade. * Bergamot will also attract throngs of predatory insects to help control the pests in the garden. This will help balance out the garden ecology. * Bergamot has a lot of uses ranging from herbal remedies, cut flowers and just beautifying the landscape!
