West portrays Vice Admiral George Rooke commanding from a small boat (at left) while the French flagship sinks in the center distance; counterfactual details that told a more exciting, and decidedly pro-British story. In 1772 he was appointed historical painter to the court of King George and went on to serve as the second president of the Royal Academy. A neoclassical painter who studied the works of the Italian Renaissance masters, he was known to England as the "American Raphael."
