Total runtime of this DVD is 2 hours 33 minutes. Film 1: "We Learn About the Telephone" (1965) COLOR Runtime 23 minutes A young man sketches a generic human (Mr. Man) who takes us back through history to show us how humans developed a need to communicate and the devices to do so. Then shows us how telephones enable the modern mid-Sixties world. Part-animated by the master John Hubley. Jimmy and Suzy play make believe with Uncle Bill and learn about the the history of communication from animated Mister Man. They learn a little about sound waves and how the telephone works, and quite a lot about telephone etiquette. Then the sky clears, so Jimmy calls his friend Bobby, and they go on a picnic. They agree to meet in front of the police station, but since Jimmy, Suzy, and Uncle Bill get there early, they learn all about using the phone for emergencies. Well made and well acted. Release Date: 1965 Entered the Public Domain: 1984 Film 2: "The Town and the Telephone" ( late 1950s) COLOR Runtime 27 minutes Employee orientation film for telephone company workers explaining structure and corporate values of the Bell System. With excellent footage of communications workers and everyday life, in Technicolor. Shows the advancement of the telephone all across the country. Has a lot of emphasis on telephone operators which is great, and also about how telephone wires are connected. Really nice slice o' life about the telephone as we knew in the 1950's. Release Date: 1950 Entered the Public Domain: 1979 Film 3: "The Nation at Your Fingertips" (1951) B&W Runtime 10 minutes This early 1950s film introduced the country to the concept of direct long-distance dialing, by showing how residents of Englewood, New Jersey, the city where the first experimental direct dial program was installed, were able to call across the country without an operator. Like many Bell System films, it's very conscious of the telephone's history and how it changed with the times. We get to see a Victorian couple shouting into an old wall-mounted phone, scurrying young male operators (the first ones were male), and an early female operator wearing a bizarre huge early headset. What's really interesting about this film, though, is the glimpse into the past we get from seeing a currently commonplace technology when it was first being introduced. Bell's automated switching system as described sounds very computer-like, and the description of how it searches for an open pathway to route the call through sounds eerily like how the internet works. An interesting historical relic. Release Date: 1951 Entered the Public Domain: 1980 Film 4: Just Imagine (1947) B&W Runtime 10 minutes Animated character "Tommy Telephone" produces a telephone by assembling 433 separate parts. Animated figure jumps from telephone company print ad to show how a telephone is put together. The telephone then assembles itself to music under the command of little ringing bells. Oddly entertaining and obviously not just thrown together as the motion of the parts is well timed to the music. Release Date: 1947 Entered the Public Domain: 1976 Film 5: Story Without End (1950) B&W Runtime 18 Minutes Postwar expansion of telephone service made possible by development of microwave radio transmission and the transistor. Release Date: 1950 Entered the Public Domain: 1979 Film 6: Mr. Digit and the Battle of Bubbling Brook (1961) Color Runtime 16 Minutes Film made to encourage adoption of the new all-number-calling telephone numbering system. Includes animated sequences. Release Date: 1961 Entered the Public Domain: 1990 Film 7: What Mr. Bell Had in Mind (1954) B&W Runtime 10 Minutes Don Ameche. Opening sequence on how people use the phone and why. Alexander Graham Bell contemplates. How to organize your phone business. Excellent montage shots of people on telephone with interesting reactions. In a very clever scene, Don Ameche recreates his 1939 role as Alexander Graham Bell in the famous "Doctor Watson, come here, I want you" scene; he then discusses the future of his wondrous invention, the telephone with Dr. Watson. Watson asks Bell how he is able to foretell all these amazing things; Bell washes his face, turns around, and he's Don Ameche, saying: "Well, who would know better than I?" (A Hollywood inside joke!); overdubbed narrator says: "Any resemblance between Don Ameche and Alexander Graham Bell was strictly intentional"!! Release Date: 1954 Entered the Public Domain: 1983 Film 8: Mr. Bell (1947) B&W Runtime 30 Minutes This dramatic reenactment of Mr. Bell's daily life during the days of his historical invention of the telephone portrays him as a highly respected, hard-working and charitable character. He is a leader in his community, speaking out against injustices being caused to the deaf and frequently speaking out prophetically about the telephone: "And then I see its lines and poles marching thousands of miles, connecting the head office of every city in the land to the head office of every other city. And then I see perhaps, in the next century, the tiniest, farthest, hamlet, woven into the wire fabric, doctors summoned, disasters met and overcome." Close-up of newspapers, stacked on a table Man sitting down at a grand piano with a candelabra on top of it, dramatically playing the piano and singing, a young woman in fancy gown, clutching flowers, watches admiringly Man lecturing, pointing to a large model of an ear Man lecturing in front of an outline of the human head, with nasal and vocal cavities Man excitedly enters a room to speak to the other man, the two men laugh, shake hands and one man pats the other's shoulder Double exposures of rippling water, a silhouette of a telephone-like apparatus, circular camera pans of early telephones Close-up of a circuit board Close-up of a telephone pole Telephone wires Two men standing around a small museum display of a biplane A man with white hair and a full white beard and mustache speaking in front of an assembly of men in suits The man lecturing dramatically with papers in one hand, gesticulating with the other Close-up of the face of the lecturer Shot of the rear of the assembly, the men in suits stand, applauding Three men sitting in front stacks of machinery Radar and sonar satellites, spinning on rooftops A machine with symbols scrolling across, a woman standing in front of a microphone -- a machine that turns spoken words into symbols for the deaf to read Stacks of telephone company circuitry A man climbing down a telephone pole Women sitting in a line at a busy circuit board Close-up of circuits being connected Three-quarter profile shot of a heroic man in dramatic lighting Release Date: 1947 Entered the Public Domain: 1976 Film 9: Communications and Our Town (1947) B&W Runtime 9 Minutes A telephone technician explains to two young boys how different types of communication foster links and interdependence between people.
