Description: BAUHAUS + KIBBUTZ An Architect's Way in a New Land Scarce Unused Copy!Arieh Sharon, Stuttgart: Verlag Karl Kramer, Tel Aviv: Massada Publishing, Ltd. 1976, 10.75 x 11.25 inches, 267pp., b&w photos, plans, maps, index of buildings and projects, biographical data. In English, German and French. Introduction by Bruno Zevi. Printed in Tel-Aviv. The remarkable autobiography of Arieh Sharon, a Galician immigrant to (then) Palestine, who joined a kibbutz and learned the foundations of utilitarian architecture and planning through constructing beehives. He became inspired by the interaction of bees within their carefully arranged communities, and subsequently studied architecture under Walter Gropius at the Bauhaus in Germany. He later became Israel's first chief of master planning, within the government of David Ben Gurion, and eventually the chairman of the Israeli Institute of Architects. He was a founding father of Israeli architecture and one of the most prolific during the 20th century. This copy in VG+ / FINE (Unused) Condition: binding tight and square, natural cloth over boards with embossed titles on cover and spine; ZERO rubbing or wear, the corners are SHARP. The boards are slightly splayed, no doubt derived from the binding materials used when printed in Israel. Other copies of the book I've seen have similar or worse splaying. The interior is bright and unmarked, printed on glossy coated paper, no bookplates or blindstamps. There is some peripheral toning to the (uncoated) front and end papers; also a crease to the rearmost photo foldout and back matter, which again may have been a printing or binding issue, given the straightness and uniformity of the crease. It does not appear haphazard or to have been caused by mishandling. The book has definitely not been thumbed or used; ZERO edge toning or discoloration to text or photos. The dust jacket is bright and unblemished, unpriced as issued, in clear archival sleeve. A brilliant copy, long Out of Print and scarce thus.
