Description: This is a 1945 one million pengo banknote from the last years of the Kingdom of Hungary. WW2 ended, and Hungary had sided with the Axis (Tripartite) Pact. The pengo, which had been the currency of the Kingdom, was in freefall. The postwar government tried several revaluations that included the "milpengo" (1 milpengo = 1,000,000 pengos), the "bilpengo" (1 bilpengo = 1,000,000,000 pengos), and the adopengo (pengos strictly for tax purposes). It was not until the new "forint" currency was introduced by the Socialist/Communist Bloc in 1946 that currency was stabilized. One fascinating thing about the Hungarian hyperinflation banknotes is that they often do not have the denomination shown in numerals. If one doesn't read or speak Magyar, it is difficult to understand the value. Also, some were not printed with serial numbers. Truly a fascinating history. Note: condition VF (very fine).
