In the 1978 Major League Baseball season, the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers to win their second consecutive World Series, and 22nd overall, in a rematch of the prior season's Fall Classic. The Yankees overcame clubhouse turmoil, a mid-season managerial change, and a 14-game mid-July deficit in the American League East en route to the championship. The game has been out of print since the early 1990s, but many folks offer new cards or you can make your own since the game came with the formula used to create the stat cards. The game uses a diceless system, called "Fast Action Cards." This stack of cards (approx. 100 of them) actually has four different (complete) sections to it (front and back with two on each side) which essentially increases the number of cards x4. The FACs give you everything you need for random numbers for each bat, plus other in-game occurences like errors and how a batter makes an out (fly to right field, etc). You can replay entire season with the MLB teams or create your own superteams. The players cards are divided by pitcher and batter cards. Pitchers have defense and other ratings, plus the important PB rating (2-7) which determines whether the result comes from the pitcher card or the batter card. The higher the PB, the better. On the pitcher cards are also results for singles (infield, single to each outfield), walks, strikeouts, balks and outs. Batter cards are broken into positions (where they are rated for fielding skill and arm strength for catchers and outfielders). They are rated for speed, sacrifice ability, clutch defense and clutch batting, on base running, etc. The batter results (on the 11-88 scale) are broken into singles and doubles to all fields, triples, homers, walks, strikeouts and outs. The higher a batter's numbers go, the better a hitter he is. Example, a batter's home run totals are 34-38. He has five homer numbers and a high hits total, making him a pretty good player. Conversely, pitchers with high PB ratings and low hit numbers are good. You make up your lineups (this is a good solitaire game, by the way) and set up the board with the teams and starting pitchers. The game has everything you'd expect in baseball. Stolen bases, hit and run, runners advancing extra bases on hits, etc. There are also unusual events (on a "Z" chart) such as player injuries, ejections, weather conditions, etc. I have played hundreds of games and find that the statistics are always realistic. As the manager, you can control when to steal, sacrifice, change pitchers, pinch hit, everything.
