Description: Shipping Audubon 1st ed Octavo HERMIT WOOD WARBLER Birds of America 1841 original JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (1785-1851) LITHOGRAPH ON PAPER, 6.5″ X 10.25″ (Sight) VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition, with no defects to report. As usual, one edge is slightly uneven from being removed from the binding. This is an original hand-colored print - plate #93 - from the royal octavo first edition of John James Audubon's Birds of America, published 1840-1844. The first octavo edition was produced under the direct supervision of John James Audubon and features strictly hand-coloring. The credits are in BLOCK LETTERS, as required, for royal octavos numbered 1-150. Includes a facsimile of the original title page, showing a date of 1841 for volume 2. This impressive image, Hermit Wood Warbler (Bowen 93) differs considerably from Havell plate395 which contains three species and six different birds all arranged in a much larger version of the Strawberry Tree, one of thirteen "composite prints" in the Havell edition that are often criticized for looking "crowded." To rectify this, Audubon gave each species a plate to itself in the octavo edition. Ron Tyler has documented that the senior Audubon did the reductions himself on approximately half of the 500 plates, using the camera lucida and making new sketches. The Hermit Wood Warbler (plate 37) is the first extant sketch attributed to Audubon himself in the "Day Book," as Ron Tyler discovered, and is "a sophisticated drawing with a surer sense of the birds themselves" than those drawings and reductions made by his son, John Woodhouse Audubon. Thus the senior Audubon was even more intimately involved with the octavo edition than has previously been suggested. For the new sketch of the final Bowen image (plate 93)the day book records he paid himself $7 per number, the same as he paid his son. Comes in a plastic protector, and will be sandwiched between wider foam boards for mailing. Buyer to pay $8 Priority Mail shipping within U.S. International shipments made at $18 via Priority Intl.
