Stimson took scores of photographs that were featured in the 1892 publication, Appleton, Wisconsin, Illustrated. This photo was likely taken in the early 1880s and printed around 1890. It was included in this book and identified as the Atlas Paper Mill - Kimberly & Clark Co. The mill shown to the left of the Atlas Paper Mill is the Vulcan & Tioga mill that was also owned by Kimberly & Clark. The board has wear to the corners and edges, overall discoloration, and stains.
