ACL had just bought a dozen handsome, modern Baldwin 4-8-4 steam engines and was still committed to steam. But within five years, the railroad had acquired more than 100 additional diesels for every type of service - switchers and more passenger units, and, even with wartime restrictions, sets of FT freight locomotives. After the war, ACL moved steadily to retire steam. The road had bought a few American Locomotive Co. and Baldwin switchers, but stuck to reliable Electro-Motive Division products for the next 15 years. Armies of F units and Geeps began to arrive. There was nothing conservative about the colors in which all of these locomotives were painted - royal purple and aluminum, which it had first used on its New York-Miami streamliners. Not only did these colors bring attention to the road's diesels, but they also came to symbolize the 5,700-mile-long southeastern carrier itself. All pictures are of the actual item.
