It is a World War II American fighter aircraft with a single seat and twin piston engines. It was developed by the Lockheed Corporation for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). The P-38 is known for its unique twin-boom design and a central nacelle that houses the cockpit and weapons. Besides its role as a general fighter, it was also used as a fighter-bomber, a night fighter, and a long-range escort fighter when fitted with drop tanks. AIRCRAFT HISTORYBuilt by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 422-3553. This aircraft had an aluminum finish. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38J-15-LO Lightning serial number 43-28538. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled. WARTIME HISTORYAssigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 475th Fighter Group (475th FG) "Satan's Angels", 433rd Fighter Squadron (433rd FS) "Possum". Assigned to pilot Lt. Carroll R. Anderson. Nicknamed "Virginia Marie" with the nose art of a woman wearing a bikini with her left hand above her head painted on the left side of the nose. The plane had a natural aluminium finish with blue propeller spinners, blue wing tips with white piping, and a blue tip of the vertical stabilizers. Squadron Number 194 painted in blue outlined in white on the outer side of each engine nacelle. The engine radiator intakes were also blue. During 1944, operated from Hollandia Airfield then in the middle of July 1944 from Mokmer Drome. In late 1944 before the invasion of Leyte, transfered to the 49th Fighter Group (49th FG). Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
