Description: APHORISMS by Walter Savage Landor 1897 RARE 1st Ed HB Book (R. Brimley Johnson) APHORISMS by Walter Savage Landor 1897 RARE 1st Edition Hardcover Antiquarian Book With Portrait. Selected from his works by R. Brimley Johnson. This is a small and beautiful book. It is really in a fantastic condition, especially for a book that is 127 years old. This has a frontispiece portrait, together with a protective sheet. This is a philosophy book and the definition for ‘Aphorisms` is ‘a pithy observation which contains a general truth. This book is divided into the following headings: Religion And Philosophy; Human Nature; Love, Friendship, Etc.; Politics; Fame, Etc.; Literature And Language; Poetry; Miscellaneous. Published George Allen, 156, Charing Cross Road, London and printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. This book is without a dust jacket. The green cloth bound boards and spine are in a good condition for a book of their age and they are intact and robust. The front board and spine have beautiful gold gilt illustrations and lettering on them. There are some small marks and stains on the cover and a small amount of wear, especially to the edges. There re bumped corners, with a little loss of cloth. Please refer to the photographs which I have provided for further details. The pages are top edged gilt, which adds a fantastic finish to this book. Inside this book the pages are thick in consistency and crisp. The edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. The pages are tanned, with light foxing to the preliminary and endpapers. The rest of the pages are really clean and, other than the uneven edging, they are really neat and uncreased. There is no pen or pencil marks written inside this book. Pages 103 to 108 have an approximately a 2 cm part to the bottom inner edge which has come away from the binding. The rest of inner edge of these pages are attached securely and this really is quite minor. The rest of the binding is tight and the pages are secure. Please see the photographs provided for further reference. All 190 pages are present. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This measures approximately 13.3 cm by 10.3 cm and 2.1 cm wide. It weighs approximately 176 grams. The English author, Walter Savage Landor, was born in Warwick 1775 and died in 1864.
