Description: Antique/Victorian ca. 1890 CDV PHOTO-SOUTHERN LADY/WOMAN-Echard-Memphis, Tenn.This beautiful antique carte de visite/photograph was purchased at a North Mississippi plantation estate sale many years ago. The Southern belle (?) is wearing the period clothing of the 1890s and has her hair in a bun.The photo was taken in the studio of W.C. Echard in Memphis, Tennessee. A Memphis city directory lists his studio location at 284 Main Street in 1890 while he boarded at 338 Main on the 2nd floor. He also seems to have had studios in Columbus, Mississippi; Florence, Alabama; and Jacksonville, Florida at various times.A Lamar, Alabama newspaper advertisement from April 15, 1886 reads as follows: Go to ECHARD'S PHOTOGRAPH GALLERY, Columbus, Mississippi, when you want a fine photograph or ferrotype of any size or style. No extra charge made for persons standing. Family group and old pictures enlarged to any size. All the work is done in his gallery and not sent North to be done. Has a handsome and cheap line of Picture Frames on hand.
