Description: Antique Early 1900's Z. S. & C. Royal Vienna Praying Couple plate with Beehive Mark From a local estate, this early 1900s Bavarian plate is a true work of art. The dipped center of the plate depicts a couple praying over their newly harvested food. A wheelbarrow is behind them with bags full of potatoes which have just been harvested. Surrounding them around the edges are beautifully detailed gilt designs. The edges are trimmed with gold, which is beautiful, patterned and fully intact. There are two stamps on the bottom. The first showing the initials "Z.S. & C" with the word "Bavaria," and the other is the official stamp of Royal Vienna, which is the second porcelain manufacturer to exist in Europe. It also has the beehive. This plate is luminous. I have an art minor but it is as beautiful as any piece of old masters in a museum. It really makes you feel the hard work, the hard life, the gratitude for a crop that will sustain them and having a bit to send to market. I think it is just gorgeous. I wish the photos did this piece of art more justice. It measures about 9 5/8" in diameter. Shipped double boxed FoundingThe factory was founded by Claudius Innocentius du Paquier, an official of the Viennese Imperial court. Emperor Karl VI granted du Paquier the exclusive right to produce porcelain in Austria. Financial difficultiesIn 1744, the factory was taken over by Empress Maria Theresa after running into financial trouble. MarkThe factory introduced a mark, known as the "Bindenschild" or "binding shield", which was a hand-painted underglaze blue mark that resembled a shield from a royal coat of arms. When turned upside down, it looked like a beehive, which is how collectors now refer to the mark. Production stylesThe factory produced porcelain in a variety of styles, including Rococo and Neoclassical. ClosureThe factory closed in 1864. New factoryIn 1923, a new factory was opened in Augarten, which revived the traditions of the original Vienna porcelain manufactory. ValueOriginal Royal Vienna porcelain is very valuable, and the most expensive pieces are hand painted.
