Description: Up for sale is an early mortar and pestle set. Appears to be made out of lignum vitae. The wood is very dense and the piece is much heavier than most mortar and pestles of the same size and era. I really like how its a matched pair, not a marriage. Some many pestles are just added to old mortars but these exhibit the same patina and wood characteristics. Definitely a matching set. Likely dates to around 1750-1780. Probably made in Europe. Lignum Vitae grows in Central and South America. Might have been made here from imported wood. Recently found in Western Pa. Shows so much usage which I love. Base wear and interior wear. A hair under 8 and half inches tall (just the mortar). Just over 7 and 1/4 wide. Pestle is almost 11 inches long Mortar alone weighs 8 pounds or just slightly under. Condition: Shows tons of usage and wear. Is split on the side. Split runs all the way through to the inside and it runs onto the base as well. Tons of base wear. Tons of interior wear (which is really cool to see). Some other wear including cracking, stains and small chips missing. No repairs. Great old patina. No touch ups or alterations to the surface. Dry. The pestle has some cracking, some losses and some chunks missing from the handle. It also have a great patina. See photos and video.
